Chapter Seven

“Ready for a drink?” Eddie asked over the din of country music while hooking his arm through Autumn’s.

She drew in a long breath of air. It felt like she’d danced every ounce of liquid out of her body. “Water.”

“You got it, sugar.” He winked at her then, dislodging his arm from hers, grabbed her hand and started to tug her through the crowd.

She was about to tell him he didn’t need to drag her, she would follow on her own, when a large warm hand wrapped around her free arm and yanked.

She swiveled backward with the force, stopping inches from Matt’s chest. The hard look she witnessed in his eyes back at the table had morphed into something else, something that riled her temper nearly as much as it frightened her.

“Pardon me, darlin’,” he said, his voice too calm for what his expression seemed to warrant, “but I think you’re forgetting who you came here with.”

She took a reflexive step back at the implication of his words. They might have ridden there together but that was all. “What are you talking about, Matt?”

“Beat it, Kinsey,” Eddie shouted from behind her. “Can’t you see we’re having a good time?”

Matt didn’t bother to acknowledge the other man, just kept looking at her. “I’m ready for that talk, Autumn.” His gaze lightened a little.

A little, but not nearly enough to distract her from his purpose. That he thought she would leave the bar this instant to suit his schedule was plain laughable. Only she didn’t laugh. She jerked her arm from his grip and narrowed her gaze. “I told you it could wait.”

“I decided it couldn’t,” he retorted firmly.

“Too bad, Matthew, because I said it could.”

Eddie tugged on the hand he still held. “Let’s go, sugar. I won’t let him bother you.”

Matt stared at her another few seconds before looking over her head. “She’s not going anywhere with you, Croner. She came here with me. She’s going home with me.”

Eddie let go a laugh. His grip on her hand grew stronger, until she had to fight the urge to slap it away. “Yeah, we’ll see about that. Considering how close you were watching you couldn’t have missed what happened out on that dance floor. She’s going home with me.”

Autumn gasped so loudly it was a wonder the owner of the establishment didn’t stop the music to see what all the commotion was about. She yanked her hand free of Eddie’s. The knowing look in his eyes made her belly churn with disgust and her cheeks burn with a mixture of anger and humiliation. She’d been dancing for Pete’s sake, not accepting an offer for an all-night engagement.

“You’re both wrong. I’m not going home with either one of you idiots!” Her face aflame, she turned and darted for the door. Crisp night air reached her as she cleared the exit, followed by the urge to cry.

Leave it to her messed-up hormones to take over now.

Stuffing her hands into the pockets of her overalls, she set off across the parking lot for the road that would take her to her parents’.
